The Contender registration deadline will be extended to Friday January 2nd due to Holiday mail. Walk-ins will also be accepted to register at Friday's weigh-in ONLY from 7pm-10pm.

Sunday's weigh-in must be pre-registered. No walk-ins on Sunday.

The Contender at the Cross Wrestling Championships

There has already been many inquiries for this year's Contender. The Ohio TOC recognized our event as NJ's largest qualifier and due to the number of wrestlers that placed at Ohio from the Contender, they have increased our number of qualifying wrestlers to the top 4 at each weight. Based upon the level of competition, the success of last year's event and the high interest for this year we're expecting more wrestlers and a more competitive tournament. We can accept a maximum of 800 participants so make sure you get your forms in as registration will close at 800 registered wrestlers or 12/31/08 which ever comes first. Forms are posted at the top of this page. Be sure to check back often as more information will be posted as the tournament approaches.

Due to the success of last year's event as well as the high level of competition, The Contender was one of the top qualifying events in NJ and will now qualify the top 4 at each weight class for Ohio Tournament of Champions. Tournament Dates Announced for 2008-2009

Dates have been set for this coming season's tournaments hosted at Holy Cross High School. Catch a great weekend of high school and youth wrestling on back to back days in January and don't miss the District 26 Championships, one of the toughest Districts in the state featuring some of the best high school teams and wrestlers in South Jersey. Check back for more tournament updates this fall.

Holy Cross Invitational - Saturday Januray 3rd, 2009 (One of NJ's toughest HS tournaments)
Last year featured a great final at 135lbs John Renard, Kingsway decisioned Joe Lospinoso, David Brearly 7-4. Joe Lospinoso finished 2nd in NJ and John Renard finished 3rd at the State Tournament. Last year's event included 17 state qualifiers and 11 state place winners. The field of teams represented some of NJ's top programs with #1 High Point Regional, top ranked David Brearly, and playoff teams; Hammonton, Kingsway, Toms River East, Haddonfield Robbinsville & Smyrna (DE). Added to this year's field are perennial playoff teams Delran, Perth Amboy & Indian River (DE). 4 spots are remaining to to bump this year's field to 20 teams.

Quickly becoming a competitive tournament, last year's event featured well over 400 participants representing 8 states including NJ, PA, DE, VA, NY, GA, NC, & CT. The Contender also sent the largest number of qualifiers from NJ to the Ohio Tournament of Champions. 80 wrestlers that wrestled The Contender also won/placed at the following state and National tournaments; USAW NJ, SJWA State Championships, SJWA War at the Shore, MAWA Eastern Nationals, Ohio Tournament of Champions, Cliff Keen Eastern Worlds, Empire Nationals, Gene Mills Eastern Nationals, & Cliff Keen Tulsa Nationals.

Last year District 26 was arguably one of the toughest Districts in NJ featuring nationally ranked Eastern Regional as well as 3 playoffs teams; Delran, Cinnaminson and Bordentown. District 26 place winners accounted for 1 State Champion, 1 State Runner-up, 1 3rd and 4 other state place winners. 4 of those wrestlers return: State Runner-up Rob Deutsch, Eastern Regional, State Champ Hank Stinson, Eastern Regional, Preston Keiffer, Eastern Regional and Anthony Saulle, Delran. In addition the 4 returning state place winners are State Champion Anthony Baldosaro, Eastern Regional, state place winner Eric Dunnet, Eastern Regional and state place winner Jackson Brady, Eastern Regional. District 26 also has 9 other returning state qualifiers.

Last week The Contender At The Cross was added as an Ohio Tournament of Champions Qualifier. Top 3 at each weight will qualify. In addition, a Nintendo Wii will be raffled off making a great last minute Christmas gift to the lucky winner. Check back for updates as the tournament approaches.

Spector Goes 2-2 at Super 32

Drew Spector wrestled 135lbs at Super 32. His bracket had 96 wrestlers including 30 state place winners. In his first match he lost 7-2 to So. Matthew Colvard of Cary, NC. In the wrestlebacks, Spector won his second match 6-0 over Jr. Stefan Wollerman of Alexander, GA. Spector won his third match 7-2 over So. Brian Onofrio of Hand, CT. In the fourth match, Spector lost 5-2 to Sr. Zachary Coulas of Ocean Twp, NJ. Coulas was a Region 6 Champion and 8th in NJ last year at 125lbs. District 26 Moves To Holy Cross

Holy Cross High School will host the NJSIAA District 26 Wrestling Championships beginning this 2007-2008 season. District 26 includes the following teams: BCIT Westampton, Bordentown, Burlington City, Burlington Twp, Cinnaminson, Delran, Eastern, Holy Cross, Moorestown, Riverside, and Willingboro. Districts will begin Friday February 22, 2008 with preliminary and quarterfinal rounds. The semifinal, consolation and final rounds will take place on Saturday February 23, 2008 with the top 3 place winners from each weight class advancing to Region 7 held at Moorestown High School.

The Contender At The Cross, Sunday December 23rd

Invitations have gone out to some of the top wrestling clubs in PA and NJ to include: Wrecking Crew, Weaver Elite (PA), RAW 241, Voorhees Jr, Aggies (PA), Premier, Elite, Souderton Area (PA), Paulsboro, SideWinders, Advantage, Top Cat, Seagull Wrestling, ShoreThing and more. The wrestling format will be the same used at the Ohio Tournament of Champions which should make this one of the most competitive youth tournaments in South Jersey. The format is 1 three minute period, all restarts are in the neutral position, and technical falls occur when a wrestler scores a 10 point margin over his opponent. We are currently looking for clubs or teams interested in holding satellite weigh-ins on Saturday December 22nd. Holy Cross Freshman Drew Spector will compete in this year's Super 32 Tournament on October 20th 2007 in Greensboro, NC. The Super 32 has quickly become one of the best National High School Tournaments in the Country.
